Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Resp disorders associated w/ productive cough & thick viscous hypersecretion eg, acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis & its exacerbation, pulmonary emphysema, cystic fibrosis, & bronchiectasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >14 yr 1 sachet once daily. Duration of treatment: 5-10 days for acute disorders. May be continued for several mth for chronic disorders.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve granules in about ½ glass (100 mL) of water. Stir until soln clears. Consume entire drink.
Special Precautions
Carefully observe asthmatics under treatment. Discontinue immediately if bronchospasm occurs. Caution in patients w/ history of PUD. Sulfur-like odor (does not indicate an alteration of the product). Soln should not be mixed w/ other medicines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including bronchospasm, angioedema, rashes & pruritus; hypotension, or HTN (occasionally). Flushing, nausea & vomiting, fever, syncope, sweating, arthralgia, blurred vision, disturbances of liver function, acidosis, convulsions, & cardiac/resp arrest.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ other drugs that may interact w/ acetylcysteine.
