Tranexamic acid
Indications/Uses
Short-term use for haemorrhage or risk of haemorrhage in increased fibrinolysis or fibrinogenolysis. Local fibrinolysis in prostatectomy, epistaxis & conization of the cervix. Management of dental extraction in haemophiliacs. Hereditary angioneurotic oedema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Local fibrinolysis 500-1,000 mg slow inj (1 mL/min) 3 times daily. Patient w/ impaired renal function serum creatinine 120-250 micromol/L 10 mg/kg twice daily, 250-500 micromol/L 10 mg/kg daily, >500 micromol/L 5 mg/kg every 24 hr.
Contraindications
Hematuria, disturbances in color vision, high thrombotic risk. Severe renal insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Perform regular eye exam & LFTs in long-term treatment of patients w/ hereditary angioneurotic oedema. Massive haematuria from upper urinary tract. Renal insufficiency. Pregnant women. Nursing mothers.
Adverse Reactions
Hypotension (rapid IV inj). Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; colour vision disturbance.
Drug Interactions
Not to be mixed w/ blood, soln containing penicillin. Increased risk of blood coagulation w/ OCs containing estrogen.
